Questions and Answers
Is Pür Detox as effective as a hospital detox?

At Pür Detox, we offer more ways to get you feeling better quickly and get your body to a truly healthy condition than in any hospital we know of. In fact, this is our entire mission. In most hospitals, patients are only given medications, a small hospital bed and mediocre food. In many hospitals, patients are also required to attend groups and meetings, even while medicated, and many end up on an even longer list of medications than when they started. Hospital detox programs are also often located in psychiatric wards, which means locked wards and less than desirable company. As a result, clients often leave early, or end up hostile toward the treatment process. At Pür, we believe in a proper medication regimen, plus big, pillow top beds, nutritious, tasty food, plenty of rest, relaxing massage, intense vitamin therapy and more rest. As a result, our clients tend to stay for the duration and develop a truly positive attitude toward the recovery process.

Why “intense vitamin therapy” in addition to medication?

It is well documented that during drug and alcohol abuse, the body is severely depleted of vitamins and nutrients. And, no matter how well we may feed ourselves during this time, drugs and alcohol just burn the vitamins right out of our system. The evidence is obvious in most cases; skin problems, sleep problems, fatigue, aches and pains, even depression can be a symptom of poor nutrition and the physical toll that drugs and alcohol take on our bodies. It is also well documented that large, carefully calculated doses of vitamins, either in pill form or administered through an IV drip, have a rejuvenating effect during detox, greatly increase recovery time, and can substantially improve a person’s health and overall mood. In a hospital, usually the best they can do is a multi-vitamin. At Pür, you get what your body really needs. A team of physicians will not only taylor your medication regimen to help keep you comfortable, but they will also customize a vitamin regimen based on your individual body needs.

Are the "luxuries" at Pür really necessary?

Our philosophy is to make our clients as comfortable as possible during what is arguably the least comfortable part of treatment. This results in a client who is more likely to stay and have successful recovery. In a hospital or other detox environment, you actually pay more for less; a smaller bed (usually one with metal rails and stiff sheets), a small TV with poor reception, or one located in a community lounge, (which can be a real treat since most hospital based detox programs are located in psychiatric wards). We believe that if our clients have as wonderful a stay as possible, that their entire attitude toward treatment will be positive from the very start.

Once a client goes through your detox process, will they be as good as new?

Physically, yes, but they will likely have a long way to go in other areas of their life. This is why we recommend our detox process be followed by residential treatment, so that the individual can work on becoming ethical, honest, and have integrity and lasting happiness in his or her life again. If you’re looking for such a program, our admissions counselors will be happy to help you locate an ethical and effective treatment center. We’ll even help get you there.

Do you use psychiatric medications?

Actually, many of our clients are people who are trying to stop taking psychiatric medications or other prescription drugs. Ironically, these are the hardest drugs to detox from. Of course, doctors we work with will set up an appropriate medication schedule to help keep you comfortable during the detox process, but we believe that many people, especially those addicted to drugs, are commonly misdiagnosed with lifelong mental illnesses or “chemical imbalances,” based on long standing depression or anxiety (to the coincidental, lifelong profit of the pharmaceutical companies). So, while we use Suboxone for heroin addiction, sedatives for cocaine or meth detox, our goal is to have our clients 100% drug free by the end of their stay with us, and that includes freedom from psychiatric drugs. It is important to note that detoxification, especially from psychiatric drugs, is done under strict medical supervision. It is also important to say that most addicts, once free from medications, and as long as they do the work necessary to clean up their past transgressions, can find much more happiness in an honest, ethical life than in a bottle of pills.

Isn’t the sauna program too taxing for a detoxing client?

The Sauna Detoxification program is separate from the medical detox process and is only approved for clients who have completed an initial detox process, and who have been cleared for it by a doctor. At minimum they must be completely drug free, eating and sleeping regularly.
Our patented Sauna Detoxification program is not only highly effective at getting toxins and drug metabolites removed from fatty tissue where they are stored, but just about everyone finds the process to be quite pleasant. It is continuously supervised, and clients are on a strict intermittent cooling down process to prevent overheating. And, with the water and vitamin regimen, the experience can leave the client feeling amazingly vibrant and clear minded. It can also get rid of physical drug cravings for life. So if, after detoxing, a person wishes to stay on and do the sauna, they can do it on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Please refer to our Sauna page for a list of prices and a full program description.

Is Pür Detox affiliated with any particular treatment program?

No. Pür Detox is a completely secular program providing what is arguably the best physical detoxification program in the world. We leave the decision of continuing treatment, including what type of treatment is needed, up to the individual. We support any continuing program as long as it is has a good track record.

Do you allow visits? Phone calls?

Visits are restricted to immediate family and must be approved beforehand (usually not a problem), but phone calls are not restricted in most cases. Laptops are welcome, wireless, high-speed Internet access is provided, and the client will have access to a private phone. Our goal is to provide a home-like environment where family and business relationships can continue uninterrupted.

What about transportation to and from home, airports or treatment centers?

We provide transportation within L.A., Orange and San Diego Counties in our luxury Nissan Armada. We can also deliver you to your home, the airport, or to your destination treatment facility when you complete our program. Due to our small size, all transport must be coordinated beforehand.

Are clients confined to the building?

Detox clients are actually encouraged to take walks along the beautiful beaches in Laguna, or visit local shops in the artist’s community here, as long as a staff member accompanies them. Inpatient sauna clients are allowed to go out as long as they are doing well and are with another client. Outpatient clients are required to attend consecutive sauna sessions, after which time they may come and go as they please.

Can special diets be accommodated?

Absolutely. but our standard fare is anything but standard, so you may wish to give it a try first. We offer everything from poached salmon in dill sauce to raspberry chocolate tortes, Spanish Omelets or Belgian Waffles for breakfast, to pesto chicken wraps with fresh Spring Greens for lunch. Of course, if a client has special dietary needs we will do everything in our power to make sure he or she is well accommodated.

Can the client eat and sleep anytime of day or night?

Within reason, yes. Hot meals may not be available at 3 a.m., but there certainly is food available. If a client wishes to sleep all day, especially during their first few days with us, then we recommend pulling the special blackout shades in the bedrooms installed for that very reason, since rest is crucial to successful recuperation. Having said that, we do try to get our clients on a “normal” schedule of sleeping and eating by the time they leave. We also understand that the lifestyle our clients have been leading might not be so easy to change, especially while medicated. It is also important to note that cravings for food are often cravings for nutrition, and we welcome any opportunity to rejuvenate the body with healthful food and plenty of rest.

What do you do to make sure the client stays?

Clients at Pür must be willing to be here, even though we understand it’s not always an easy decision to make. We understand, and expect, a certain degree of turbulence in some cases. However, we are neither a locked facility, nor willing to have other clients at risk. Having said that, it is also the attraction for most people who come here – to be around people who are willing and have a fairly good attitude about becoming drug free. If a problem does arise, we will do everything in our power to satisfy the individual needs of our clients, or to handle their objections in the most effective way we are able. We believe that if a client comes to us willing to be here, their stay is comfortable enough, and their detox handled effectively, they will complete the program and succeed in becoming drug free.

Why is Pür Detox cheaper than hospital detox programs even though you offer so much more?

Hospitals have immense overhead costs associated with running large client populations while using medical space and equipment to accommodate them. This says nothing of the expense of the bureaucracies often running the show. At Pür, we have a small community of clients (six to nine) in a home like environment, and are therefore able to offer a more comfortable setting with a greater level of service at a lower cost. And, while the medical staff we work with is highly trained and experienced in the detox process, we have specialists in their respective fields, which actually lower our cost, while increasing our quality of care.
