We’ve had a great year at Pur Detox. Numbers of people we are helping are still on the rise and we are looking forward to even greater expansion in the new year. I wanted to share a testimonial from one of our recent completions.

September 15, 2009

To the staff of Pur Detox:

Just about 10 days ago I had a plan in action to take my life. I had been hoarding pills and the option to take them became a very viable answer to the total hopelessness I was feeling.

I have an incredible husband of 36 years and 4 children. The youngest is 4 and oldest 34. Today, the thought that I could actually choose to leave my family sends pure terror down my body.

Looking back, I did have the tools to know I had to have help; I could not do alone what I considered to be a lack in strength and intelligence. I knew that what I was doing was not working; every visit to the psychiatrist was just an addition of medication. It was as if I became completely lacking in feelings (up or down) then he had done his job. I turned my computer on and by my belief, the Grace of God opened the web page of Pur Detox. Alternative—Naturopathic—off medications not medically needed (or working) and using vitamin, mineral, all natural supplements? Was this my answer? It took only a second to ask for a call back. The call came in seconds and my questions were answered and something outside of my power loudly let me know this was what I was looking for.

Being a state away from this facility, I was met by a staff member within 5 hours of that call. I knew instinctively that this was exactly where I was supposed to be. I could hardly move, speak, eat, drink; however, I could believe that something might actually help me; I could sit in the possibility of a return to life. Although my first day was a holiday, the Medical Director came to the facility to assist in the beginning of a process to help me feel comfortable in my skin. There was something in this action that gave me the feeling that these people cared about me—someone in this world (other than my family) wanted me to know that I was worth feeling good; I was worth the time of these incredible people, even on a holiday! Me, who was just ready to leave this world being worthless, poor in spirit, lost, and terrified.

I have now experienced a group of men and women who are willing to walk to the beach at 1:00 AM if it might help in how I feel. I believe that is a very hard thing to dismiss. These wonderful people seemed to know intuitively what I needed (not necessarily what I wanted) and I believed in their way.

By day 4 here, I had a voice back, I had a smile back, again I say, I believed so strongly this was the right place for me. My body began to stop hurting, I began sleeping, eating, laughing, looking at a beautiful future. It has not always been easy and uphill—but there was always someone to help me see good, to help me see I was not alone. I was not condemned to live in a world of shadows; a world where I could not play with my 4 year old or my grandsons; a world that I could not be there for my husband and grown children. I realized I had hope again and my smile, (inside and out) began to grow. I know hope.

I no longer take (or crave) a medication (this includes benzodiazepines, antidepressants, hormone replacement therapy, just to name a few). These have been replaced and balanced in my system in a natural way from the help detox at Pur.

I am writing only a few hours from leaving for home—a very short time to change my entire life. I do live in reality and know that it is not always going to be easy and someone will be there with an answer. I do know that change can occur and I know I can pick up the phone at anytime and talk with someone who knows and cares.

My husband and youngest daughter visited me just a few days ago and out of the mouth of babes, my 4 year old said “Momma, you have light in your eyes”. Is there a better testimony? Not for me—I want to be there as a Mom with that light—one that is real and not dimmed by medication/drugs.

If I wanted the research base, I could find it—it would only affirm what I am experiencing. I don’t need to look at the research—I want to live my life that has been returned to me.

I have never had to prove myself to anyone here. When I first walked through the doors, I had a feeling that I was trusted and I was believed. When I was unable to sleep at night—I was encouraged to sleep whenever I could. Rest is good for the body and soul. I have been in other facilities and there is no comparison for me. I truly believe I will live a longer and happier life continuing to do what I have been taught here. When I need help, I know where to call; I know where my call will be welcomed as coming home.

I was told last night by a dear friend who is also a patient here that I was the funniest person she had ever known. She is talking about someone who was unable to smile only a week ago. I laugh, I cry, I feel.

I would name the staff, but there are too many. Words can’t express what I feel about each and every one of you. You each have a very special place in my heart. My gratitude goes beyond what time provides me. From my heart and soul, thank you for believing in me and helping me cleanse body and soul. I have hope; I need say no more. I finally got found the marijuana detox that saved my life.

Thank You,

N.B.

In all likelihood your body is exhausted. Your system has attempted to continue working despite all the poisons you have used to get high. Even if you have only been abusing prescription medications, in high doses and concentrated amounts they can be toxic to your system. That is the reason that why the detox process is very important. Detoxification is a medically supervised procedure allowing your body to rid itself of all the chemical compounds and poisons that have been taking their toll on your system.

Cocaine Detox

Regular use of cocaine can lead to strong psychological dependence (addiction). Those who abruptly stop their cocaine use can experience cocaine addiction withdrawal symptoms as they readjust to functioning without the drug. The length of cocaine addiction withdrawal varies from person to person and also depends on the amount and frequency of use. When someone abruptly stops cocaine use, they can experience cocaine withdrawal symptoms as they read just to functioning without the use of cocaine.

Following detoxification, your body has the opportunity to begin the of treatment process with a healthier system and a clear mind. Your chances of successfully completing a program of treatment will now be significantly increased. Cocaine detox in itself, isn’t recovery. Recovery occurs by dealing with the physical and psychological aspects of dependency. Cocaine detox address only the physical element of addiction.

Hydrocodone Detox

If a regular hydrocodone user stops taking hydrocodone, he or she will experience hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms within six to twelve hours We work closely with nearby detox facilities that provide medical supervision in order to ensure that our patients are treated as comfortably and effectively as possible.

During the detox process, addicts can potentially go through a variety of withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms may include minor problems, such as anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headaches, nausea, and troubled sleeping. The individual’s specific drug of choice combined with various other factors, can possibly lead to more severe, and possibly life threatening, symptoms.

Ativan Detox

Ativan is the brand name for Lorazepam, an anti-anxiety agent. Ativan is a benzodiazepine and mild tranquilizer, sedative, and central nervous system (CNS) depressant. Ativan can cause psychological and physical addiction. Individuals develop an addiction to Ativan because it produces feelings of well-being. Ativan is very addictive. Withdrawal symptoms, similar in character to those noted with barbiturates and alcohol have occurred following abrupt discontinuance of Ativan. The more severe withdrawal symptoms have usually been limited to those patients who received excessive doses over an extended period of time.

There is a wide variety of drugs and narcotic substances an individual can experience strong detoxification from. Examples of these drug detoxes include heroin detox, alcohol detox, opiate detox, oxycontin detox, xanax detox, cocaine detox, hydrocodone detox, ativan detox, drug detox, medical detox, suboxone detox, marijuana detox, medication detox, and methadone detox.

Heroin (also known as “smack”) is a powerful narcotic which re-gained increasing popularity in the 1990’s and continues to gain popularity with men and women. Heroin is the main component in the opiate family. Heroin is a white to brown powder or gummy, black, tar-like substance derived from the opium poppy. It is injected directly into a vein, sniffed, or smoked. The opiate group of drugs include naturally occurring (opium poppy extracts), and synthetic drugs commonly used for their analgesic (pain relief) and cough-suppressing properties. Morphine was isolated from opium in the early 1800’s and was widely available without prescription until the early 1900’s when the non-medical use of opiates was banned. Withdrawal symptoms continue to be the greatest obstacle in heroin detoxification treatment. Studies concur that there is no proof that one detoxification treatment is better than another. Relapses continue to occur in numerous cases around the world therefore making heroin detoxification a monster of an addiction. Statistics show that the average heroin addict will stop and start detox 10 to 25 times in their lifetime relapsing to heroin use every time.

Heroin

Heroin accounted for 39% of drug induced deaths from overdose and 11% of drug abuse-related emergency room episodes in 1992. Typically, heroin is used every four to six hours in doses of 4 to 8 milligrams each. The euphoria of heroin lasts only a few hours. Heroin users show signs that include constricted and non-reactive pupils, muscle relaxation a decrease in pulse, reflexes, blood pressure, and respiration rate, and fresh needle marks. The drug also causes constipation. Heroin use drives out the neurotransmitter endorphin, when this happens and heroin isn’t used, withdrawal symptoms begin. Symptoms include muscle ache, nausea, sweating, insomnia, chills, diarrhea, and vomiting. Periods of addiction usually last four to six months, often ceasing because the addict is arrested or enters a drug treatment program. Periods of abstinence usually last no longer than a few weeks or months, and relapse is usually precipitated by physical or mental stress. Once addicted to intravenous use of heroin, a staggering 70 to 80 percent of users continue to use for many years or a lifetime.

Methadone

Methadone detox is invaluable to those who have tried to discontinue using opiates with methadone maintenance. Individuals are as physically dependent on methadone as they were to heroin or other opiates; this is not recovery from drug addiction. Detox from Methadone may be more difficult than other substances, but the end result is a body clean from drug polluting toxins. An individual who uses methadone over a period of several months to years and decides to discontinue use will experience a long and painful withdrawal. Many people go from being addicted to heroin to acquiring a methadone addiction. They continue with this “treatment” for years, fearing the withdrawal that will occur when they stop. Methadone does not have to be the way of life for former heroin addicts. Gradual cessation followed by a drug-free program of rehabilitation may be the answer for many sufferers.

Oxycontin

OxyContin was first introduced in 1995. It is a Schedule 11 controlled drug used in the treatment of severe pain disorders. OxyContin is a long acting formulation of oxycodone, the medication’s active ingredient.

The drug is a powerful pain killer and widely used in clinical medicine. However, because of its mood altering effects, Oxycontin can be abused. Over the past decade, OxyContin has become a popular drug and the mood altering effects it produces has led to a significant increase in abuse of the drug and chemical dependency and addiction.

Respiratory depression is a major severe complication of oxycontin detox. Respiratory depression is a cause of concern in elderly or debilitated patients, and usually follows after the use of large initial doses in non tolerant patients, or when other opioids are given concurrently. In the community, the majority of OxyContin-related deaths have occurred in individuals who were ingesting large quantities of oxycontin in combination with either alcohol or benzodiazepines. OxyContin may cause severe hypertension. The drug is easily abused by simply crushing the tablets and either ingestion, injection, inhalation or placed rectally. The drug can have serious side effects when injected as it has a prolonged extended action. OxyContin detox is accomplished similarly to other drug detoxification. The individual is stepped down slowly off their dose of OxyContin until they no longer physically need to take it. Without this process, the withdrawal symptoms from OxyContin may be so severe that OxyContin detox may seem impossible to the individual. Detoxification tracked by long-term treatment is an effective method of relieving withdrawal symptoms while patients adjust to a drug-free state.

To suddenly stop taking oxycontin can result in serious withdrawal symptoms. The withdrawal syndrome may be characterized by restlessness, dizziness, headaches, anxiety, yawning, perspiration, queasiness, sweating, and chills. Other symptoms also may develop, include irritability, vague pain, weakness, abdominal cramps, insomnia, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, or increased blood pressure, respiratory rate, or heart rate.
